Age-Appropriate Tasks

2 TO 3 YEARS OLD

  • wipe down kitchen chairs and table with damp sponge
  • carry in the newspaper or mail
  • pick up toys and clothes
  • fold washcloths
  • wash vegetables, tear lettuce, stir
  • help set the table - napkins and silverware
  • feed the pets and refill water bowls
  • help clear own plate from table
  • put groceries away at kid level
  • unload spoons and forks from dishwasher

4 TO 5 YEARS OLD

  • same as previous list, plus:
  • make own bed (fluff pillows, straighten sheets, arrange stuffed animals neatly)
  • clean own bathroom sinks with wipes
  • water plants
  • prepare simple breakfast/lunch and clean up
  • empty small trashcans
  • help with vacuuming, sweeping, dusting
  • transfer clothes from washer to dryer
  • dust, mop floors

6 TO 8 YEARS OLD

  • same as previous list, plus:
  • wash dishes; load and unload dishwasher
  • prepare simple dishes, such as salads and desserts

help change bed-sheets and put dirty sheets in laundry

  • pack own lunch for school
  • fold simple laundry
  • dust baseboards
  • vacuum and dust furniture
  • walk pets
  • pull weeds
  • get self up in the morning with an alarm clock
  • put groceries away

9 TO 11 YEARS OLD

  • same as previous list, plus:
  • change light-bulbs and batteries
  • fold own laundry and put away
  • clean refrigerators, toilets
  • wash and vacuum car
  • garden care
  • assist younger siblings with homework
  • organize closet and drawers

12 TO 14 YEARS OLD

  • same as previous list, plus:
  • change bedsheets independently
  • do laundry start to finish
  • wash windows
  • help with admisistrative tasks in parents business
  • pepare one family meal a week
  • babysit for short periods of time (with an adult near-by)
  • have total responsibility over pet
  • clean shower and tub
